Options and Equipment

THE VAN:  This began as a 'Sport' version of the Dodge Grand Caravan. It has the more economical of the 6 cylinder motors available, which is a 3.3 liter, with automatic and overdrive.  It is well equipped with full power and convenience features and dual A/C.

MOBILITY/ADAPTIVE: This van is a very special mobility minivan. Because it was built when new with the intention of being used for commercial purposes (intended to service clinics/hospitals) it has several special features and the quality is  of a commercial rather than consumer-use nature. I will compare/contrast (C/C) this van versus a more common sort of minivan conversion;

Floor; This van has commercial-grade hard vinyl with traction-grips. (C/C) others usually have carpet or lower grade vinyl.

Front seating; This has a very easily removable passenger front seat on wheels and quick-release base and wiring. A wheelchair can easily go up to the dash area (C/C) others have a less easy to remove seat and wiring, if removable at all. And the transition area and logistics don't function as well (this one is quick/easy) as this van.

Anchor method; Has a total of (4) super-grade aluminum full-width tracks with nearly unlimited positions which the anchors can be inserted from side to side and front to rear. This allows for a huge variety of positions and potentially several chairs at one time. (C/C) Other vans usually have fewer tracks, not as long and with not as many points per foot of potential to anchor.

Lowered floor: At 10 inches, this has the maximum drop of any of such vans.  And it does extend to the dash.  (C/C) Common floors are  generally 6, 8 and 10 inch drop amounts, this van has 10.

***BONUS HEADROOM: This is the first minivan I have seen with the added headroom of 10 inch drop floor PLUS 3-4 inches extra ceiling clearance at the entry!  This was due to the intended commercial use nature of this van. Please see photos below.

Ramp and slider: In order to have maximum reliability/dependability and virtually zero chance of failure, this van was built with a counter-balanced manual ramp, rather than electric. It simply and with VERY LITTLE effort folds and unfolds.  And the door is a manual slider also, for the sake of reliability/dependability.  With this van you NEVER have to be concerned with a dead battery or malfunctioning remote, or jammed electric door, etc. And if you have not owned a wheelchair van before you need to know that sometimes the electric/hydraulic mobility equipment does malfunction, which at minimum can cause stress and delay.

History of Ownership

Was bought new here in Medford at the Dodge dealer downtown.  Was initially leased, as a wheelchair van, to a medical transportation company in the Roseburg area. The lady I bought it from acquired it when it was less than a year old, because the transportation company had to downsize.

History of Care

It was nice to discover that the Carfax report shows 8 different times of being serviced at the Dodge dealer.  And the prior owner had VERY recently replaced all 4 brakes, at a cost of about $800. At the same time new, quality tires were installed, for about $600. So that's around $1,400 recently invested.  During the inspection, which is part of the 'Rick's Rejuvenation' process, there was nothing of note needed.  It currently runs, drives and performs excellent.

Carfax Report Summary

(Carfax is a widely used database which indicates the history of a vehicle including accidents, prior owners, etc.)

All good, nothing negative on the report.

*** Original EPA MPG was 18/24

*** This generation began in 2001 and continued until the radically new style of (and largely disliked) van in 2008. If you are shopping for a Dodge/Chrysler/Plymouth minivan, it is notable that this generation of 2001 and newer are much improved beyond earlier years.

Summary of this Gem

This is a very special minivan wheelchair van.  Because, it was designed and built to commercial-grade standards for medical transport use. But it was used as such for only a few months. Since then it has been owned by a family for their disabled child. Among its many features; it has an unusual amount of headroom for special reasons and extra-versatile wheelchair location potential.
